My ‘Interesting’ Tea Experience

One of the questions on Quora was, ‘what was the worst meal that you ate out of politeness?’. My answer got numerous upvotes so I have decided to put the response on here.

I went to India a few years ago and some of the food there was ‘interesting’. Interesting good and in some cases interesting bad. In other instances interesting very very bad.

Alongside visiting places such as Delhi we were also exploring some of the remoter parts of the country. We went to this one monument in the mountains and we were offered tea. Despite being English I hate tea, my plan was to just force the first cup down me and then politely say I am full.

Then it became apparent that this tea had salt and butter in it. Have you ever woken up in the morning and thought to yourself, hmmmmm I am really craving some tea with salt and butter in it? Yeah, me neither. I was trying and trying to get this stuff down me. I did not want to seem like an insensitive Western tourist. The left side of my mouth was hating the tea. The right side of my mouth was hating tea. My tongue was not a fan either and my teeth were just screaming loudly for tooth paste.

After having half a cup I just thought no more. There was too much of it and it was too hot for me to be able to shot it. Fortunately I was able to escape from the group, ‘I am just going to go and look at these beautiful views’. After double checking that no one was around me the second half of that cup quickly disappeared.

6 years later I am still highly suspicious of all tea.
